AUGUST CHRISTIAN HESSE (1874-1935) was born to German parents, GEORGE AND MARY HESSE, at Fameosage near Cuba, MO. The family then moved to Anutt, MO. He lived there as a young man helping his father in the milling business.
He married LENORA CAROLINE PRYOR (1874-1946), daughter of WILLIAM AND ADELINE PRYOR. To this union nine children were born: IMO (1900-1901); IVAN (1901-1968); AUGUST EARL (1903); MARVIN CHRISTIAN (1904-1936); GEORGE WILLIAM (1906); GERTRUDE (1907-1984); VERNON (1911); ALMA IRENE (1916) and PRYOR (1919-1945).
They moved to Licking in 1907 where he operated Licking Mill. He was a miller and worked for George Williams and Franklin Crow for several years. Later he bought half interest in the mill in partnership with Dave Freeland.
He made "Cream of the Valley" first grade flour and "Daisy" second grade flour, corn meal and feeds. Farmers of the community brought wheat and corn to trade for flour and meal. He continued in this work until his death in 1935.
He played bass horn in the Licking Community Band. They played for many civic functions
He served the City of Licking as mayor and was a member of the Licking School Board for many years.
