JAMES S. PRYOR 1844 - 1910

The following are census records and information collected on James S. Pryor. It is speculated that he may be connected to the Pryor of Marion Co., TN, perhaps through the line of John H. Pryor and wife Harriet Williams. James was from the Hamilton Co., TN are and may have lived in GA before moving on to the Nashville area and finally to Texas and Arkansas.  His only child, Hattie, was named Harriet Jane Pryor.

Civil War:  James S.Pryor joined the 37th Infantry Regiment, formerly the 7th Tennessee Regiment Provisional Army, [and also called 1st East Tennessee Rifles] was organized at Camp Ramsay, near Knoxville, Tennessee, in October, 1861.

His daughter, Hattie Jane PRYOR, married Rev. William Jefferson Osburne bef. 1887, Powhatan, Lawrence Co, AR.   James and Melvina are named on the marriage record.  Then Melvina died or they divorced:  1889 James Pryor married Mrs Mary A.Hubble Sept.17,1889 in Lawrence Co, AR.

House 150-153 James PRYOR, born Sept  1845, age  54, farmer, TN TN TN.   Mary  A., wife, born  Oct. 1845, age 54, GA NC TN.

From researcher Melba Pygott: Letter to J. S. Pryor, Powhattan, AR from "R M Tankesley", Chattanooga, TN dated July 6, 1902, discussed his application for a Confederate pension.  R M Tankesley was one of the captains of 37th Inf D Company and was counted in Dist. 14 of Hamilton Co., TN on the 1860 Census (he was a 24 year old merchant).  In 1880 Rufus M. Tankesley, circuit court clerk, was counted in Chatanooga TN.   Another  letter from a BUTLER who says he has known James for over 40 years.  There was an Asher Butler in Co D.
